In 1998, the Russian government declared chamomile to be the country's national flower.

The term "chamomile," sometimes known as "camomile," is derived from the Greek word chamaimlon. The chamomile as the national flower of Russia is matricaria chamomilla.

Chamomile flowers, native to Europe and Western Asia, thrive throughout much of Russia. Between June and August, they bloom and can be found on cliffs, grasslands and fields.

It is also a medicinal plant species that appears frequently in traditional medications, particularly those of cultures in modern-day Russia. 

Chamomile is often linked with healing, rest and tranquility due to its usage in producing relaxing tea and its familiar, calming aroma. Chamomile is revered as an almost magical cure-all herb in Russian folklore.

The image of blooming flowers can be seen in modern Russian art, such as famous paintings, figurines, murals and even pottery. They can also be found on stamps, in official media, and in artistic representations of the government.

Chamomile was used to cure medicinal ailments even in ancient Greek and Roman times. Traditional healers recommend chamomile to alleviate symptoms such as mental discomfort, anxiety, muscle strain, nausea, cramps and more.

It is also used in folk medicine to treat everything from chicken pox to stomach ulcers. While chamomile is not a miracle cure, research show that drinking chamomile tea can have health benefits. According to some research, chamomile can help lower blood sugar, relieve period cramps, reduce inflammation and enhance sleep quality.

Full sun along with light, sandy and moist soil are ideal for the flower plant. It requires a moderate amount of water and a brief cool season to thrive, thus it does not grow well in tropical or desert environments.
