Wimbledon 2023: Four Chinese players to meet seeded opponents

Nine players from the Chinese mainland will compete in the men's and the women's singles matches in the coming Wimbledon Championships that will begin on July 3. Four of them will play seeded players in the first round.

Zhu Lin will meet the tournament's No. 1 seed, Iga Swiatek of Poland in the women's singles first-round match. The two have never played against each other. Zhu set her best record at Wimbledon by advancing to the second round last year. Swiatek is seeking her first Wimbledon and third Grand Slam title this time.

Yuan Yue will face the No. 19 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. The two haven't played against each other before. Yuan will participate in the Wimbledon Championships for the second time in her career in July after losing in the women's singles first round in 2022. Azarenka set her best record for the tournament by reaching the semifinals twice in 2011 and 2012.

Zhang Shuai will play the women's singles No. 20 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia. Zhang Shuai previously won four of the six matches against Vekic, including defeating her 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2 in their only meeting on the grassland in the Aegon International Eastbourne qualifier match in 2016.

Wu Yibing will meet the men's singles No. 10 seed Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. in the first round. The two have never faced each other before. Wu will make his Wimbledon debut this time. Tiafor's best record at the All England Club was reaching the Round of 16 in 2022.

The other Chinese male player Zhang Zhizhen will face Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the first round. This will be the first match between the two. The last time Zhang Zhizhen appeared in Wimbledon in 2021, he lost in the first round. Van de Zandschulp didn't go through the first round either in 2022.

As the only seeded Chinese player, Zheng Qinwen (No. 24), will play Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the women's first-round match. The two haven't played against each other. Zheng advanced to the third round in the tournament in 2022. Siniakova's best record in Wimbledon is also going to the third round which she did in 2016, 2018 and 2021.

Wang Xinyu will face Storm Hunter of Australia in the women's singles first round. Wang Xinyu beat Hunter in both of their previous matches. Both will try to secure their first singles win in the coming competition.

Bai Zhuoxuan will meet Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium in her first Grand Slam tournament. The two haven't played against each other. The last time Bonaventure competed in Wimbledon in 2019, she lost in the first round.
