"Qing Guo" in the name of this block literally means "green fruit," while "Xiang" means "small lanes," since they used to be the place where vendors gathered to open stores selling fruit and other products, hoping to benefit more from its proximity to the ancient Grand Canal, an important waterway for transport during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

This ancient block has witnessed many of the trials and tribulations the city has seen over the centuries, and features a variety of architectural styles from both the Ming and Qing dynasties.

What's more, many ancient residences of celebrities, ancient temples, bridges, piers, theaters and other relics in the block, all offer visitors a glimpse of ancient China. Many of those who shone in the imperial examinations used to live in Qing Guo Xiang. This ancient exam system was used by the royal court to select officials.

The entire block extends for around 400 meters from east to west and 200 meters from north to south, covering an area of around 8.7 hectares. The area has retained its magnificent ancient architecture while incorporating modern leisure spots and tourism facilities. And last but not least, almost every style of local delicacy can be enjoyed in many eateries housed in the block.
