Rioting across France appeared to calm on the night of July 1 after tens of thousands of police officers were deployed in cities across the country following the funeral of a teenager shot by police. Family and friends gathered in Nanterre early on the morning of July 1 for the funeral of Nahel, a 17-year-old born to Algerian and Moroccan parents. At 1:45 a.m. local time on July 2, the situation was calmer than the previous four nights, although sporadic violence still occurred.
