Ukraine's counteroffensive is failing in all directions, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told a conference call with the Russian Armed Forces leadership on Monday, Russian news agencies reported.
The remark came as Ukraine claimed earlier in the day that its forces had recaptured 37 square kilometers from Russian forces last week, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailing the progress.
"Last week was difficult on the front line. But we are making progress," Zelenskyy wrote on the Telegram messaging app on Monday.
According to Russian media, Shoigu on Monday also broke silence on the brief mutiny by the Wagner private military group last month, saying that plans to destabilize Russia had failed because of the troops' loyalty and the mutiny did not affect Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine.
