The death toll from a shooting in the U.S. city of Philadelphia on Monday night has risen to five, local police said.

Another two children, aged two and 13, were wounded but are in stable condition.

Police have taken into custody a 40-year-old male suspect without further incident after the shooting on the eve of Independence Day.

According to local media reports, police heard gunfire just before 8:30 p.m. local time (0030 GMT on Tuesday) and received multiple reports of a male armed with a rifle shooting in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia.

Roughly 10 minutes after the shots rang out, police officers reported they had apprehended the suspect wearing a ballistic vest and had recovered a rifle and a handgun in a nearby alleyway.

The suspect has no known connection to the victims and no clear motive.

"At this point, all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said, adding that she had "absolutely no idea why this happened."

A second person was also taken into custody for allegedly picking up a gun and firing shots at the mass shooting suspect, police said.

It's not clear whether that person has a connection to the gunman.

At least 341 mass shootings have happened across the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit group that defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.
