China expanded the scope of energy saving and carbon reduction for energy intensive industries, according to the country's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on Tuesday.

In a document issued by the NDRC and four other departments, China is looking to boost new energy efficiency levels in 11 areas, such as ethylene glycol, urea and titanium dioxide.

The requirement was made on the basis of previous benchmarking of energy efficiency in 25 industrial areas, including oil refining, steelmaking and electrolytic aluminum, according to the NDRC.

It also urged to target the advanced energy efficiency level of both domestic and foreign enterprises, thus better determining China's benchmarking of energy efficiency.

According to the NDRC, the transformation, upgrading or phase-out for the previous 25 industrial areas should be completed by the end of 2025. For the 11 newly added areas, it should be completed by the end of 2026.

China aims to have its carbon dioxide emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
