The Japan Center for Economic Research has estimated that the maximum cost of filtering the nuclear contaminated water and disposing it in the ocean would be 3.4 billion yen, equivalent to 23 million US dollars. That is the least expensive solution compared to other options such as solidification and landfill, which could cost a hundred times more. However, concerns have been raised as to whether the Japanese government is taking into account the long-term costs associated with this decision. It remains to be seen whether saving money in the short term will outweigh the potential risks of this solution.
