A total of 209 relics unearthed in Xinjiang are currently on display at the National Museum in Beijing. Exhibits include colored pottery works, items of bronze, jade and gold ware, as well as garments, paintings and sculptures that all show the diverse multiculturalism of the region, which once formed a key section of the ancient Silk Road.

The exhibition is divided into four sections covering the history and cultural exchanges taking place in the region, and highlights the cultural integration between Xinjiang and inland China.

Among the many exhibits is a drinking vessel from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) which is eye-catching due to its unique shape. The slim, 20-cm-high container has a smiling human head carved on its upper part above a small head of cattle, features which were once popular on the peninsula of Asia Minor and around the Mediterranean.

A thin, round golden decorative plate featuring an embossed tiger was one of the discoveries unearthed during the 1970s in southern Xinjiang. Dozens of razor-thin golden accessories carved with animal patterns were found in a coffin, proved to be relics from the Warring States period (475-221 BC).

The earliest unearthed konghou, an ancient stringed instrument, is also among the exhibits. It was made from a poplar tree branch and featured a sound box, neck and frets. The discovery proves that the konghou was first popular in Xinjiang before being introduced to inland China.
