Four people were killed and seven others wounded in a shooting at a July 4th party shortly before Tuesday midnight in Shreveport, southern U.S. state of Louisiana, authorities said on Wednesday.

Shreveport police said that at least one gunman opened fire at a street gathering of about 100 people. The community event has reportedly taken place for more than a decade.

Three people were announced dead overnight, and police discovered another body in a nearby field on Wednesday morning, Shreveport police spokesperson Angie Willhite said.

Among the wounded, one person was in extremely critical condition, she said.

No suspects have been taken into custody and the motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, according to Willhite.

The shooting came amid a recent burst of gun violence across the United States over the Independence Day weekend. Mass shootings were reported in multiple cities including Baltimore, Philadelphia, Fort Worth and Washington, D.C., leaving at least 10 people dead and dozens others injured.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned the gun violence on Wednesday, urging Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and placing blame on the proliferation of guns in the U.S.

"Lives are at stake here, folks. Lives are at stake in communities, the lives of our kids," she said.

The United States is struggling with a large number of mass shootings and incidents of gun violence.

There have been over 340 mass shootings in the country so far in 2023, according to data collected by the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.
