A Chinese representative on Wednesday urged the United States to stop imposing excessive unilateral coercive measures on Venezuela, describing the approach as "typical power politics and coercive diplomacy," when speaking at the 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the Venezuela issue.

The representative said the U.S. measures seriously impede Venezuela's economic and social development, as well as its efforts to improve people's livelihood, and damage Venezuelans' basic human rights.

China firmly safeguards the UN Charter and the basic principles of international relations, and respects the development path chosen by the Venezuelan people, the representative said.

China appreciates the efforts and achievements made by the Venezuelan government in promoting and protecting human rights, the representative said, calling on the international community to view the human rights situation in Venezuela in a fair and objective manner.

The representative said China, as always, advocates addressing differences in the field of human rights through constructive dialogue and cooperation, as well as handling relevant issues through technical cooperation and capacity building, and opposes external forces interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs.

Politicizing human rights issues and establishing country-specific mechanisms without the consent of the country concerned will only intensify confrontation, and won't be conducive to the healthy development of the international human rights cause, the representative said.
