Dejounte Murray has agreed in principal to a four-year, $120 million contract extension, including incentives, with the Atlanta Hawks, his agent Rich Paul told ESPN.

Having been traded to the Hawks in summer 2022, Murray averaged 20.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game during the 2022-23 campaign. He still had one year left of his current four-year, $64 million deal, before agreeing to the extension. Since he is not eligible for a designated veteran extension, the first-year salary of Murray's new deal can be no bigger than 140 percent of his final-year salary of his previous contract, if he agrees to an extension now.

Murray has a player option for the 2027-28 season. He would have turned 31 years old by then.

The Hawks traded Danilo Gallinari, three future first-round draft picks and one swap for Murray and Jock Landale in that deal after Murray was chosen for the All-Star Game in the 2021-22 season. He was also selected into the All-Defensive Second Team in that campaign.

The Hawks acquired Murray to pair Trae Young in the back court and share the offensive burden off Young's shoulders. Both saw a small drop in their scoring output. The team had a much faster pace last season, climbing up from the 20th of all 30 teams in the 2021-22 season to the 9th in the 2022-23 campaign.

By trading John Collins to the Utah Jazz in late June, the Hawks sent a message to the rest of the team that Young and Murray will continue to hold a major part of the team’s ball possessions on the offensive end. Bogdan Bogdanovic and De’Andre Hunter may launch attacks off the dribble from time to time, but Bogdanovic usually plays off the bench and is not always in the Hawks’ clutch-time squad. Hunter will have to sharpen at least one skill from 3-point shooting, efficient isolation in mismatch, offensive aggression, or trustworthy defense against multiple positions, if he doesn't want to be traded in the middle of the 2023-24 season.
