Mauricio Pochettino, who took over as Chelsea manager on July 1, shared his goal for the 2023-24 season with reporters on Friday: to win from day one.
"My target is to win, my aim is to win. Play(ing) well is our style, philosophy and culture. If you don't win in a club like Chelsea, you will struggle," Pochettino said.
Chelsea spent over 611 million euros (about $670.2 million) during the two transfer windows of the 2022-23 season but finished 12th, their worst record since 1994, in the Premier League, missing out on all European competitions for the new season.
"With the players we have and the strategy to believe, it's about winning, being competitive. And translate this energy to our fans. To create the togetherness, it's a (little) difficult, in the Premier League, all together, we can be close to win(ning) again," Pochettino said.

Pochettino had not managed any team since he parted ways with Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022. Before he went to Ligue 1, the Argentine manager worked at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur between 2013 and 2019, leading the latter to the UEFA Champions League final during the 2018-19 campaign.
"In football, it is difficult to wait," Pochettino told reporters. "At Chelsea you need to deliver from day 1. What we are working now in the training ground is about delivering from now, to give our best. Football is about today or yesterday. We cannot talk long term. We cannot tell people we need six months, I think it is not good. We are going to have a squad of players who can deliver."
Chelsea let go of a lot of players this summer in order to downsize their overloaded roster, including selling fan favorite Mason Mount to Manchester United and parting ways with long-time defender Cesar Azpilicueta. Pochettino is not concerned by the squad reshuffle.
"I think when I was outside, I was hearing different opinions about Chelsea and the squad being too big," he said. "For me, (this is) a fresh start and who is coming to come. I don't think too much about that. People come in, go out."
