At the ongoing World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, experts said trustworthy and responsible artificial intelligence should be developed.

With Chinese companies feeling the heat from ChatGPT and investing in similar projects, over 30 large language models were unveiled at the conference, some of which were on show for the first time.

China has built more than 2,500 digital workshops and smart factories, said Xu Xiaolan, vice minister at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, at the opening ceremony.

According to Xu, after intelligent transformation, the research and development cycle in these workshops and factories has been shortened by about 20.7 percent and production efficiency increased by about 35 percent.

The application of AI not only puts forward higher requirements for data, algorithms and computing power, but also poses more challenges to security, privacy and ethics, said an AI scientist who has attended WAIC this year.

Trustworthy AI

He Jifeng, academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said a trustworthy AI should be committed to ensuring data security and credibility, system behavior should be held accountable, algorithm models interpreted, and network environment and legal ethics credible.

In response to people using AI for illegal purposes, some companies have come up with new tricks to hamper them.

One company unveiled its image-tampering detection technique at the conference, with which can be used to trace tampering in screenshots and distinguish generated pictures.

Responsible AI

Experts also believe that AI should be "responsible."

Lyu Peiming, executive vice president at the Tongji University, said that to develop a responsible AI, multidisciplinary collaboration should be made to integrate technology with the needs of society.

In promoting the innovation and application of large language models, experts believe that risk management and industry governance of these models should be strengthened.

An official at the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economic and Information said that the municipality adheres to the concept of science and technology for good.

Held since 2018, the annual WAIC focuses on building a world-class cooperation and exchange platform and showing China's wisdom and Shanghai's AI solutions to the world.
