Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the European Union should open the way for Ankara's accession to the bloc before Türkiye's parliament approves Sweden's bid to join the NATO military alliance.
Speaking ahead of his departure for the NATO summit in Vilnius, Erdogan said Sweden's accession hinges on the implementation of a deal reached last summer during the alliance's summit in Madrid, adding that no one should expect compromises from Ankara.
Erdogan also said that an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict will ease Kyiv's NATO membership process.
Türkiye's ratification of Sweden's NATO membership bid and the United States' sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye are not to be linked to each other, Erdogan said.
Erdogan also said that he will discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin the extension of a deal that allows the export of Ukrainian grain from its Black Sea ports beyond the current July 17 deadline.
