Ground shift cracks homes in southern California

Hillside homes in a southern California community crumbled and cracked as the land beneath them shifted and slid into a canyon below, officials said on Sunday. Residents of 12 homes in the Rolling Hills Estates, a city 30 kilometers south of Los Angeles, were forced to evacuate. Energy providers have shut off power and gas to the area as a safety precaution. Officials said they did not know yet what may have caused the ground to shift.
