South Korean lawmakers, Japanese activists rally against nuclear-contaminated water dumping plan
02:11

South Korean opposition lawmakers joined Japanese activists for a protest rally outside the Tokyo High Court on July 11, demanding the Japanese government scrap its plans to release nuclear-contaminated wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The group had joined a protest outside the Japanese prime minister's residence in Tokyo on July 10 to send the same strong message.

The Japanese government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which operates the stricken plant, plan to dump some 1.3 million tonnes of treated wastewater now stored in about 1,000 storage tanks into the Pacific Ocean. Domestic fishing groups, neighboring countries, Pacific coastal areas, South Pacific island countries, and many in the international community have protested the plan, questioning the Japanese government's claims that the wastewater is safe following treatment.
