The Chinese track and field team kick-started the Asian Athletics Championships campaign on Wednesday with the women's 4x100m relay gold and three silver medals on the opening day in Bangkok, Thailand.

Liang Xiaojing, Wei Yongli, Yuan Qiqi and Ge Manqi won the women's 4x100m relay title, clocking 43.35 seconds.

In the men's 4x100m relay final, Wu Zhiqiang, Xie Zhenye, Chen Jiapeng, and Chen Guanfeng took silver with 38.87 seconds behind hosts Team Thailand, who set a new national record with 38.55 seconds.

"We meant to win the title. However, we are in the phase of transition where we deal with age gap within the squad and learn to cooperate. Younger teammates need chances to train and compete," said veteran Xie, 29, who currently holds the Asian record of 200 meters with 19.88 seconds.

In the women's javelin, Tokyo Olympic champion Liu Shiying took silver with her first attempt of 61.51 meters, and compatriot Gu Xinji finished fifth with 57.54 meters. Japan's Marina Saito won gold with her best attempt of 61.67 meters.

Zeng Rui added another silver for China in the women's triple jump with 14.01 meters in her last attempt, behind Japan's Mariko Morimoto with 14.06 meters.
