Chinese Foreign Ministry: China is an opportunity, not a risk

"China is an opportunity, not a risk, and treating it as a source of risk is a complete misnomer," spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin said on Thursday.

Recently, leaders and officials in the U.S. and its Western allies have suggested "de-risk" their relations with China.

"Talking about 'de-risking' should start with figuring out what the risk is and where the source is," Wang said, emphasizing the deeds China has done like coming up with the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and promoting the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Noting that currently non-cooperation is the greatest risk, non-development is the greatest insecurity and non-solidarity is the greatest challenge, Wang pointed out that what all countries should jointly guard against is the risk of political confrontation and the instigation of "a new Cold War", the risk of economic decoupling and chain-breaking.

He then added that all countries should also prevent "the risk of military intervention and aggression and the expansion of armed alliances, the risk of transferring crises to the outside world, and the risk of fomenting divisions and advocating confrontation in terms of public opinion."

China is not the source of these risks, but precisely a firm force in preventing and resolving them. The practice of "de-Sinicization" in the name of regional risks is in fact a way to create and spread risks from which no one can benefit, Wang said, adding that recently, scores of executives of international companies paid intensive visits to China to support cooperation with China in practice.

China is ready to work with all parties of goodwill to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, to jointly prevent and resolve real risks, and to inject positive energy into world peace and security and global development and prosperity, he said.
