A second round of voting will take place in Thailand's parliament for the election of a new prime minister after frontrunner Pita Limjaroenrat, the 42-year-old leader of the Move Forward Party, failed to secure the majority of votes in the first round, poll results show.

Pita lost the PM vote with 324 for, 182 against and 199 abstentions, short of the 376-vote simple majority required to become the prime minister, according to a roll-call of votes which was broadcast live.

The vote was held after several hours of debates among the parliamentarians.

In a joint session of the 500-member lower house and the 250-senator upper house, Pita was the only candidate nominated as prime minister.

"I will do my best to match the hope and encouragement from the people," Pita told reporters earlier as he arrived at parliament. "I'll use this opportunity to find a consensus."

The Move Forward Party emerged as the largest party in the lower house of parliament in Thailand's general election in May.

Pita's alliance must now decide whether to back him again in another vote slated for July 19, or put forward another candidate, as it seeks to form the next government.
