'Compensation' fund reveals Fukushima water discharge is a big problem: Chinese Foreign Ministry

The Japanese government's use of "compensatory payments" in exchange for the silence of its own people, Japan's disregard for the security and interests of neighboring countries and Pacific island countries will only create stronger doubts and objection among the international community, said Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on Friday.

It is reported that the Japanese government has set up a special fund of 80 billion yen (about 4.1 billion yuan) to subsidize the fishing industry in the Fukushima area.

It reveals that the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea is a real and big problem, the spokesperson said.

"If there is no problem with the nuclear-contaminated water discharged into the sea, why would the fishing industry in the Fukushima area be affected? Why does the Japanese government use the compensation fee to settle the matter?" Wang asked.

Noting that people in China, South Korea, Russia, the Pacific island countries and the Pacific coastal countries are all strongly opposed to the Japanese side's push for the dumping plan, Wang said that "the Japanese government has been deaf and dumb to the voices of opposition at home and abroad, and tried to silence the Japanese people by setting up a so-called special fund."
