The New York Jets have reached a four-year, $96 million contract extension with their defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, according to ESPN.

Williams' deal includes $66 million of guaranteed money, surpassing linebacker C.J. Mosley's $51 million in 2019, thus becoming the biggest deal in the team history of the Jets. Meanwhile, his $24 million of average salary is the second-highest for his position, behind only $31.7 million of Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, but Williams ($66 million) makes more guaranteed money than Donald ($65 million).

Multiple defensive tackles secured lucrative deals during this offseason before Williams. Jeffery Simmons inked a four-year, $94 million extension with the Tennessee Titans; the New York Giants gave Dexter Lawrence a four-year, $90 million deal; Daron Payne got a four-year, $90 million contract from the Washington Commanders.

As a result, Williams skipped the Jets' voluntary workouts and complained several times on social media platforms about him not landing huge extensions. He even deleted the team from his Twitter bio and changed it to, "Defensive tackle for ...."

"The success of this organization is beyond important to me and completing this deal allows me to turn all my attention to positively impacting that," Williams said in a statement on Thursday while adding the Jets back to his bio. "I am thrilled to put forth my best efforts alongside my brothers to get prepared for this season ahead of us."

Having started 16 games for the Jets in the 2022 season, Williams defended four passes, had 12 sacks and 55 tackles, including 12 for losses, in addition to 28 quarterback (QB) hits. He played a key role in the Jets' defense which allowed the fourth-fewest yards and points.

Giving a juicy deal to Williams is also a big move for the Jets, who didn't sign extensions with any of their first-round selections between 2012 and 2018. In fact, of the 55 players drafted by the team in those years, only two signed multiyear extensions.

"We are thrilled to secure Quinnen as a New York Jet for the foreseeable future, as he embodies everything we look for in our players," the Jets' general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement. "He is a leader on and off the field, who does everything asked of him and more. He is a young, ascending player who has shown a consistent ability to dominate the line of scrimmage and help this team win. We are happy to have the business of football behind us and to turn our focus to getting ready for the 2023 season."
