The application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology has surpassed human expectations. As people admire the stunning performance of AI technology, they are also deeply concerned about the problem of information ethics and security. According to a poll for global netizens launched by CGTN, nearly 90 percent of the respondents believe technological innovation for generative AI technology should be accompanied by effective regulation to avoid potential risks.
In the survey, nearly half of the respondents, 44 percent, said they have been exposed to or used generative AI-related products in their daily lives. One user commented, "I have used AI to assist me in writing. But it's very important to write and think for yourself. Artificial intelligence products should only be used as a backup and should not be relied on."
The netizens' concern is not unreasonable, as in recent years, some generative AI products have created information that is no different from human beings, which could easily lead to misinformation. Some 87 percent of respondents were deeply concerned about this. In addition, 85.7 percent of the respondents were concerned about privacy issues. Generative AI technologies collect users' data for learning and training and may violate their privacy.
Meanwhile, another 85.7 percent of respondents believe the main source of training for generative AI techniques is the internet, which is full of unfriendly, stereotypical and discriminatory information. If illegal information and controversial views are cited, this can lead to social conflicts and instability.
One of the respondents in the survey argued that whether generative AI technology is beneficial or harmful depends on the person using it. Meanwhile, another said, "False information and other negative phenomena on the internet will always exist, but mankind must move forward."
Seven Chinese departments, including China's Cyberspace Administration, jointly released a measure to regulate artificial intelligence-generated content. According to the poll, 89.2 percent of the respondents appreciate China's approach and believe potential risks should be effectively avoided while encouraging technological innovation.
Another 82 percent believe international cooperation should be strengthened to promote AI technology innovation and guard against risks and challenges.
The survey was published on CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, with over 30,000 users voting within 24 hours.
