A large-scale disaster response exercise was carried out on Saturday in waters off east China's Shandong Province to better prepare workers at an offshore wind farm for extreme weather conditions and possible accidents. It was the first multi-scenario comprehensive emergency drill to incorporate air, land and maritime operations in the Bohai Sea.
The first mission was to evacuate injured people from the booster station of Shandong Changyi Offshore Wind Farm, 18 kilometers from the shoreline.
In another simulation scenario, a crew member fell into the water during the evacuation, and maritime search and rescue volunteers aboard a yacht nearby rushed to the man who was signaling for help using a smoke generator.
The exercise also simulated a ship collision and a consequent fire and oil spills. A tugboat approached the scene and started spraying water through fire cannons to stimulate the fire-extinguishing process. Floating barriers were set up to stop the spread of oil pollution, and skimmers were activated to recover oil from the sea surface.
