Six explosions have been detected at a chemical plant in the U.S. state of Louisiana, triggered by a fire. The blasts shook homes several kilometers away, sending flames and smoke billowing into the air. Local emergency officials urged a few hundred nearby residents to shelter indoors for several hours and turn off their air conditioners and ceiling fans. The flames erupted late Friday in an area of Dow Chemical's plant that handles ethylene oxide, a flammable and toxic chemical.
