The 604-meter-long street was named after Li Yuanhong, a high-ranking army commander who was elected as the governor, and later served twice as the President of the Republic of China between 1916 and 1917, and between 1922 and 1923. He was born in Huangpi district of Wuhan where people also called him Li Huangpi. The road was changed to reflect his moniker in 1946.

In 1997, Lihuangpi Road was turned into a historical and cultural block boasting a series of historical buildings and relics. After extensive renovation work, the block welcomed visitors in 2016 with a revamped appearance.

Over 10 historical buildings featuring old European architectural styles have been preserved along Lihuangpi Road.
