A U.S. soldier touring the Joint Security Area crossed the inter-Korean border into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) without permission and is believed to be in custody, a U.S. official told Reuters on Tuesday.
The United Nations Command, which oversees the demilitarized zone area at the border, earlier on Tuesday identified the individual as a U.S. national who had crossed into DPRK without authorization while on a tour.
"A U.S. national on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorization, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)," the UN Command said in a statement.
"We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and are working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident," it said, referring to the DPRK's military.
The U.S. soldier had been due to face disciplinary action by the U.S. military, two U.S. officials told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
