Eyewitness stories on Chinese modernization
03:08

As China embarks on a new journey towards socialist modernization, experts worldwide remark on China's progress toward modernization, something they witnessed themselves. In an interview with CGTN host Tian Wei, Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University recalls his experience in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the 1980s and praises China's 40-year journey from poverty to prosperity, saying China's experience is "a guidepost for Africa in its next 40-year journey to end extreme poverty." Bert Hofman, the former director for China at the World Bank, tells the story of China's infrastructure development. Thirty years ago, it took him two and a half days to travel from Beijing to a village in Guangxi. Nowadays, with better transportation, it takes six hours for the same journey. So he believes that infrastructure is crucial to the turnaround of rural areas.
