Egypt faces power pressure amid ongoing heat wave
CGTN

Egypt is experiencing unprecedented high temperatures that exceed 45 degrees Celsius, which has put it under pressure for power.

The country has started temporary power load reduction because of the excessive pressure on the country's grid during the ongoing heatwave, the Egyptian cabinet announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The increasing power consumption nationwide led to high consumption of the gas used in power generation, causing further pressure on the power networks.

Residents have reported power cuts in several areas in Egypt's capital Cairo over the past couple of days as temperatures have risen above 40 degrees Celsius during a heatwave that has affected southern Europe and North Africa and coincided with extreme temperatures elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere.

And further rotational power outages are expected to continue for the coming few days, as indicated in the statement.

Though July and August are usually the hottest months of the year in Egypt, the continued rise in temperatures is worrying. According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority on July 19, the heat wave in Egypt will continue until next week.
