In a meeting of art masters, Wu Zuoren completed a painting of Qi Baishi, a work that went on to become one of Wu's most representative masterpieces, while immortalizing the character of a Chinese art icon.

Wu was an important participant and promoter in the development of the art scene in 20th-century China. He achieved remarkable accomplishments in both oil painting and traditional Chinese painting.

At the time "Portrait of Qi Baishi" was painted in 1954, Chinese art master Qi Baishi was over ninety years old and posed as a model for Wu. As he sat, Qi dozed off. Even in his deep slumber, Qi's right hand maintained a habitually-tight grip of three fingers, reminiscent of his professional gesture while holding a brush and the hidden image of his mouth slightly puckered as if sucking on the brush beneath his silver beard. These highly significant details were intricately captured by Wu's keen observation.
