Team China won the women's 4x100m freestyle relay bronze medal at the World Aquatics Championships on Sunday.

Composed of Cheng Yujie, Yang Junxuan, Wu Qingfeng, and Zhang Yufei, the Chinese team clocked 3:32.40 behind 1st placed Australia who broke the world record in 3:27.96.

China's Qing Haiyang set a new 100-meter breaststroke Asian record with 57.82 seconds as he finished top in the men's semifinal.

France's Leon Marchand, 22, delivered the biggest surprise of the night, breaking American Michael Phelps' 15-year-long world record in the men's 400-meter individual medley in 4:2.50. Phelps set the previous record of 4:03.84 at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, which gave him the first of his eight gold medals in Beijing.

With this victory, Marchand becomes an early local favorite for a gold medal in Paris 2024.

Chinese swimmers entered the finals in multiple events, including the women's 100-meter butterfly, women's 200-meter individual medley and others.

Meanwhile, China broke the Asian record of men's 4x100m freestyle relay in 3:11.38 as they finished fourth.
