The deadly gym roof collapse that claimed 11 lives in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province was caused by the illegal stacking of construction material, local government told a press conference on Monday.
According to the preliminary investigation, the construction unit working on an adjacent teaching building illegally piled perlite, a thermal insulation material, on the roof of the gymnasium.
The material absorbed the recent rainfall and got heavier, eventually collapsing the roof on Sunday afternoon when a total of 17 students and two coaches from the school's volleyball team were training inside the venue.
According to the local government, relevant persons responsible for the construction of the teaching building are being investigated by police and compulsory measures have been adopted again them in accordance with the criminal procedure law.
