With a long history, the town has witnessed many changes over the centuries, yet still retains much of its former glory. It was an important commercial port and transportation hub in ancient times, attracting merchants from all over the world to do business there. Gradually, the place became a political, economic, military and cultural center during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

Despite its proximity to the busy water transportation routes that fueled the rapid development of the local economy and culture, the tranquil environment of the ancient town provided a haven far from the bustle of the metropolis. Surrounded by emerald waters, visitors can amble along the ancient flagstones enjoying a slower pace of life as they appreciate the old buildings.

Located in the Qianzhou Ancient Town area, the Qianzhou Confucian Temple highlights the precious value of local culture. The 20-meter-tall temple has two stories featuring a brick-and-wood construction, covering an area of 5,000 square meters. From arched ceilings to delicate patterns decorating its columns, the temple's design presents a unique architectural style.

Many folk performances and cultural events are often held there during festivals, such as local dramas, stilt-walking shows as well as song and dance performances.

The ancient town is home to many forms of historical and cultural heritage unique to the Tujia and Miao ethnic groups. Local craftspeople create sophisticated folk handicrafts using their skillful hands and artistry.
