The transfer drama of Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has grown more complicated as Al Hilal of the Saudi Professional League bid record 300 million euros (about $332.3 million) for the French star.

According to ESPN, PSG confirmed Al Hilal's offer and allowed the club to openly negotiate with Mbappe, but the player is not interested in going to the Saudi league.

If Al Hilal manages to acquire Mbappe in the end with that price (or higher), it will surpass the 222 million euros (about $246 million) paid by PSG to Barcelona for Neymar in 2017 to become the most expensive transfer in football history.

Saudi clubs have been very active during the summer transfer window with their deep pockets. A series of star players, including Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Roberto Firmino have joined the Saudi league. Cristiano Ronaldo already played a season in Al Hilal after parting ways with Manchester United.

The UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said in June that he was not concerned over such trend. "I think that it's mainly a mistake for Saudi Arabian football. Why is that a problem for them? Because they should invest in academies, they should bring coaches, and they should develop their own players," he said. "The system of buying the players that almost ended their career is not the system that develops football. Tell me one player who is top, top age and who starts his career and went to play in Saudi Arabia?"

Ceferin won't like it if the answer he receives is Mbappe. The 2018 FIFA World Cup champion striker had a fallout with PSG after he told the club more than once that he won't exercise the option to extend his contract for another year after the 2023-24 season. Therefore, the French heavyweights decided to sell him for something, which is likely to be lower than the 180 million euros (about $199.5 million) they paid to get him in 2018, before letting him go for nothing next year.

The most likely destination for Mbappe is Real Madrid, which have made multiple offers to PSG for him in recent years. They were willing to pay as much as 200 million euros (about $221.7 million) in 2022, but Mbappe chose to sign an extension with PSG. Not that things have changed and Real have the option to sign Mbappe for free in summer 2024, PSG are looking at a much trickier scenario.
