Built from 1078 to 1085, Shuidong Street is a treasure trove that houses the long history and rich culture of Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. It was an important commercial hub for the region during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties due to its favorable geographical location. The street reached its heyday in the early 20th century. 

This area exploited the unique advantages of its waterways to develop rapidly as a transportation hub, attracting people to move there. Over time, many people from different ethnic groups moved to the area, creating a multicultural and inclusive society.

Located in the downtown area, the ancient street bore witness to the city's many vicissitudes. Over 200 shops were burned down during the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and the street lost its former glory and fell derelict. After the victory in the war, the diligent locals renovated the street and created a series of new landmarks. And, thanks to the indomitable spirit of the people, the street had its former vitality restored and renewed sense of dynamism.

From ancient to modern times, Shuidong Street has gone through several phases of transition where it greeted the public with a revamped appearance. The classic qilou building complex is well-preserved, presenting the fascinating architectural style and typical characteristics of the ancient city of Huizhou. Qilou, also known as arcade houses, are usually two to four stories high, where the ground floor is used as a storefront. These arcade houses are terraced, offering a unique street scene. In 2023, Shuidong Street was listed as one of China's national-level tourism and leisure blocks.

The 730-meter-long street is also known as a cornucopia for people looking to set up successful businesses. Thanks to its reputation, many time-honored Chinese brands have opened there, where the bustling street not only reflects the determination and diligence of the local people but also provides a lively vibe for visitors.
