A week-old wildfire on the Greek resort island of Rhodes tore past defenses, forcing more evacuations as strong winds affected firefighting operations. Residents on the island joined the fight against the blaze, armed with shovels, tree branches, fire extinguishers and towels. Smoke, flames and scorched earth are across the island.
According to a Greek media outlet, the fire has scorched an estimated 80 square kilometers. Authorities evacuated 19,000 people over the weekend as an inferno reached coastal resorts on the island.
