The giant panda couple Mei Xiang (female) and Tian Tian (male) has resided at the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park since December 6, 2000.

The loving couple has lived in the U.S. for 23 years where they successfully raised four cubs. They are expected to return home to China before 2024.

Both bears were born to wild-born parents at the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan Province, southwest China.

Mei Xiang and Tian Tian's first offspring, and the Zoo's first surviving panda cub, Tai Shan, was born on July 9, 2005. Tai Shan means "peaceful mountain." Tai Shan returned to China in 2010 and has since resided at the Wolong's Beifengxia Base in Ya'an, Sichuan.

The latest agreement under the collaboration framework between the national zoo and the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda allows Mei Xiang and Tian Tian to remain at the national zoo until Dec. 15, 2023.

Their last surviving cub, Xiao Qi Ji, a male, born on August 21, 2020, is also expected to return to China by 2024.
