Chengdu University Games: China's Cao Maoyuan wins first gold, Song Cuifang triumphs in Nandao

China's Cao Maoyuan won the first gold medal at the 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games with a victory in the Wushu men's Nanquan event on Saturday.

Cao won the gold with 9.770 points at Chengbei Gymnasium in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.

"I've been looking forward to the Universiade for a long time. It feels good to win the first gold," said Cao.

Lau Chi Lung of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region claimed the silver, while Shahin Banitalebi of Iran came third with bronze.

Also on Saturday, China's Song Cuifang clinched the gold medal in the women's Nandao event.

Je Ga-geong of South Korea and Wong Sam In of China's Macao Special Administrative Region took the silver and bronze medals respectively.

At the Chengdu Universiade, the competition of Wushu, which runs till August 3, consists of Nanquan, Changquan, Taijiquan, Gunshu, Daoshu, Taijijian, Jianshu, Qiangshu, Nandao and Sanda events.
