France defeated Brazil 2-1 in their second game in Group F at the FIFA Women's World Cup at Brisbane Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, on Saturday.
Eugenie Le Sommer scored first for France in the 18th minute, giving her side the lead early in the game. The team invested a lot of defensive resources in front of the box, making it difficult for Brazil to move the ball and launch an attack.
Brazil took advantage of the opponents' defensive carelessness in the second half when Debinha tied the score at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Brazil grew more comfortable on the offensive end since then, but they failed to mark all attackers of France in a corner kick in the 83rd minute. Wendie Renard broke into the box from the back and scored a header for France to lead again.
Brazil had the chance to tie the score again in the final minute of the stoppage time, but their final shot next to the penalty point was too poor to even fly toward the goal.
France rose to No. 1 in Group F thanks to Saturday's win with four points, the same as Jamaica that beat Panama 1-0 in the other game of Group F later on the day. Brazil are third with three points. Panama became the first eliminated team of the group. They will play France on August 2, while Brazil face Jamaica on the same day.
