A 21-year-old woman was killed and eight other women were wounded in a mass shooting on the West Side of Chicago early Sunday morning, according to local police.
Chicago police said the shooting happened around 1 a.m. when multiple people were seen getting out of a black Jeep and began shooting the women gathering together in the North Lawndale neighborhood.
The ages of the nine victims range from 20 to 33 years old.
The woman, shot in the face, was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to the Mt. Sinai Hospital, authorities said.
A 28-year-old woman was shot eight times in the torso and is in critical condition. Five other women sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while two victims suffered graze wounds.
Police said no one has been detained yet and the incident is still under investigation.
The United States is struggling with a large number of mass shootings and incidents of gun violence. There have been over 415 mass shootings in the country so far this year, according to data collected by the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.
