Built parallel to the seafront in 1821, Beihai Old Street soon embraced prosperity thanks to its favorable geographic location on the Beibu Gulf. The street witnessed many changes to the city, marking the rapid growth in the region's coastal economies.
Beihai Old Street was originally 200 meters long. After several phases of development over different periods, the street now extends to 1.27 kilometers long. There are nearly a thousand arcade houses lining the street, which is the longest and best-preserved arcade building complex in South China.
Influenced by the European architectural styles of the 19th century, most of these arcade houses, or qilou in Chinese, are two to three stories high and have vaulted ceilings and curved windows, featuring delicate carved lines and exquisite patterns. The massive square pillars of the arcade houses are presented in the Romanesque architectural style.
