China resolutely opposes the U.S. providing military aid to the Taiwan region and has lodged solemn representations to the U.S., Defense Ministry spokesperson Tan Kefei said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks when commenting on Washington's military aid package worth $345 million for the Taiwan region.
Tan stressed the Taiwan question concerns China's core interests and is a red line in China-U.S. relations that must not be crossed.
Out of hegemonic mentality and Cold War thinking, some forces on the U.S. side have continued to strengthen military ties with the Taiwan region through arms sales, military assistance, training assistance, encouraged and instigated provocative actions by the separatist forces which intensified cross-Straits tension and confrontation, he said.
China urges the U.S. to stop all forms of military liaison with the Taiwan region and to refrain from going further down the wrong and dangerous path, he said.
The wheels of history are rolling on toward China's reunification, and no individual or force can stop it, he said.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army pays close attention to the situation in the Taiwan Straits, maintains a high level of alert at all times, resolutely defends national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and firmly safeguards peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, he added.
