The giant panda Xiao Qi Ji will turn 3 years old later this month.
Xiao Qi Ji, a male cub, was born on August 21, 2020, to mother Mei Xiang and father Tian Tian at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington D.C., United States.
His name, Xiao Qi Ji, which translates as "little miracle" in English, was chosen through an online poll held on the zoo's website. In respect of Chinese tradition, the name was not chosen until 100 days after his birth.
Xiao Qi Ji is indeed a miracle. He was born via artificial insemination to the giant panda Mei Xiang with frozen semen collected from Tian Tian, the zoo's adult male.
That has made Mei Xiang, 22, the oldest giant panda in the U.S. and the second-oldest documented in the world to give birth.
This is also the first time a zoo in the country has experienced a successful pregnancy and birth via artificial insemination using only frozen semen.
