It might surprise you how many methods the Chengdu Universiade Village have employed to reduce carbon emissions. Its architecture layout firstly made well use of the natural terrain to minimize the volume of earthwork. By using shading and top skylight shutters, it reduces the energy usage of indoor air conditioning by 6 to 7 percent. Inside the village, the greening rate has reached 50 percent. Native plants are preferentially selected to reduce maintenance cost. In terms of watering the vegetation, highly efficient water-saving irrigation methods like micro spray irrigation, are used, decreasing landscape water consumption by about 50 percent.
