The Diving Festival takes place on the river in front of the village, while the marvelous granite rock, referred to as the "One Hundred Cups of Wei Wine Stone," is located in an open space within the village. Astonishingly, the surface of the large rock is arranged with precisely 106 naturally formed "wine cups."
According to the village elders of Gangbian, the origins of this large rock date back to ancient times, when the villagers regarded it as a "sacred stone" – and have been revering it for generations ever since.
Legend has it that the ancestors of Gangbian invited a singing teacher to come to the village to teach songs to the young people. Learning that the singing teacher had a fondness for drinking, the villagers prepared a local specialty – wei wine made from glutinous rice, to entertain him at every meal. On the night of the Diving Festival, the singing teacher, in high spirits, sang and drank throughout the night until daybreak. The teacher had taught 106 songs and drunk 106 cups of wine, which coincided exactly with the number of cups on the large rock.
