As a cultivation hub for good-quality cotton, Yongji City in north China's Shanxi Province made its reputation through colorful Huichang cloth, a national intangible heritage item with a history dating back more than 400 years. A piece of Huichang cloth is produced after 72 manual processes. It is well-knitted, soft and bears the cultural aesthetics of north China. To promote the local economy and create jobs, authorities in Dongkaizhang Village, Yongji City set up a studio to help the local women to produce more than a hundred different products made from Huichang cloth, including bedding, garments and shoes. These fabric items are not only sold across China, but are also exported to Russia, Singapore and South Africa.
