China's recent weather has been extraordinary, from historic rainfall in Beijing and surrounding areas leading to fatalities and missing persons, to record heat waves just before. Petteri Taalas, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, links these extreme events to climate change, exacerbated by increased carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Taalas warns, "Negative trends in weather patterns will continue until the 2060s." To avert future crises, he stresses the need to reduce fossil fuel consumption.
