Expert: Europe needs to know who its ally is, and it's urgent to build up its 'strategic autonomy'
01:47

Renaud Foucart, senior lecturer in economics at Lancaster University, points out that Europe has always assumed they are a natural ally of the United States. But since President Trump, there is a fear in Europe that if Trump comes back, or if someone like Trump comes back, it might have to be on its own again. Prof. Iain Begg from the London School of Economics and Political Science also says that Europe tends to support the U.S. in its competition with China, but European businesses and governments recognize the importance of China as a trading partner and supplier.
