In a cuju match, the goalposts were usually situated in the center of the field and the two teams stood on either side of the goal. A two-foot-tall, so-called "eye" was placed in the middle of the goal. The objective was for the teams to kick the ball through the "eye" without it touching the ground. The team that managed this the most times in the ancient sport was declared the winner.
