South African Ambassador to the BRICS bloc Anil Sooklal said the country will not yield to the pressure from the U.S. to stop using Huawei Technology equipment in its networks, Bloomberg reported on Saturday.
"There was tremendous pressure on us from the U.S. to stop using the Huawei network," said Sooklal in a lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.
He added "It is banned in the U.S., and a major part of Europe has banned Chinese technology."
Sooklal stressed that Huawei has already provided thousands of training sessions and technology transfer opportunities over the years.
Since 2019, Huawei, a major supplier of equipment used in 5G telecommunications networks, has been the target of successive rounds of U.S. export controls. The U.S. also pushed hard to have Huawei banned in Europe where an increasing number of EU countries is mulling over such bans.
